A grassroots-style coalition that formed earlier this year to address education funding concerns has received the Clark County School Board of Trustees’ support.

The board unanimously adopted a resolution Thursday night that backs the efforts of Fund Our Future Nevada, which has been trying to bolster support for revamping the state’s K-12 funding formula.

The coalition wants Nevada lawmakers to develop and fully fund a cost-based formula that sends money to school districts based on students’ needs; ensure revenue streams, such as marijuana and room taxes, help provide adequate education funding; and establish reasonable accountability measures tied to that funding.

“It’s an old formula, it’s outdated and it bears no relationship to the actual cost of educating students,” said Amanda Morgan, legal director of Educate Nevada Now, an organization that’s affiliated with the coalition.

School districts in Carson City and White Pine, Churchill and Washoe counties already have signed onto the resolution, Morgan said. Coalition members have been traveling the state to spread the message and unite schools behind this funding cause.

Education funding is expected to be a key issue in the upcoming legislative session — and the gear-up is well underway. Last month, the school board approved a separate resolution supporting iNVest 2019, a policy document that outlines education priorities for the session.
