Today begins another chapter in the history of The Indy as we unveil our elections page for 2018.

This has been weeks in the making, and we are proud to pull back the curtain on what we hope is an informative and user-friendly page that will help illuminate key races this year. We wanted to provide as much salient information as we could in an interesting and accessible way.

Here’s what you can see if you click on our Elections 2018 tab:

—Major contests of statewide interest are listed at the top. If you click on a contest, you will see candidate cards pop up, with brief bios. We have also provided links to campaign websites and, if we have done one, a link to an “On the Record” piece so you can see how he or she stands on issues. Other candidates also are listed but do not have cards. We know there may be some objections to this decision, but I remind you of our standards. We continue to welcome feedback on this.

—For the Legislature, we also have a “Lay of the Land” feature that shows our preliminary projections for partisan control based on voter registration and candidates. For instance, if a district has a double-digit partisan advantage, we rate that seat likely to go to that party in November. We may change these projections as the year progresses depending on what transpires in various campaigns.

—We have a section of each page devoted to voter registration, complete with an interactive, color-coded map that shows county numbers if you click. We will update these numbers monthly as new data comes in from the secretary of state and/or counties.

—There are regularly updating sections with a variety of recent polling numbers and recent election stories on The Indy.

I want to thank the entire team for working on this page and making suggestions along the way. A special shout-out to our tech mastermind, C.J. Keeney, who made the page work in all its complexity; our designer, Peter Vogt, who gave the page its distinctive look; and to reporter Megan Messerly, who produced most of the candidate cards and was very helpful during the design process.

As you explore the pages, please tell me what you like and what you don’t like, as well as any errors or omissions you may find. Email me at [email protected].
