Descripción general
Two days after the state-run primary, on Feb. 8, Republicans will vote in the Nevada GOP’s caucus — continuing a decades-long history of presidential caucuses in Nevada, despite a 2021 law mandating that the state hold a primary for each major party.
Why should I care?
The presence of this election, alongside the state-run Republican primary, has sparked some confusion as GOP voters have a chance to vote in a pair of similar presidential nominating contests in the span of only a few days in February.Unlike the primary, the caucus will feature former President Donald Trump, who remains broadly popular among state Republicans. The Nevada Republican Party says voters will need to provide a government-issued ID to participate in the caucus.
Why it matters:
The Nevada GOP will use the results of the caucus, not the primary, to determine how the state’s presidential delegates will be awarded at the Republican nominating convention, meaning whoever receives the greatest number of votes will win the most delegates.Who can vote?
The caucus is limited to registered Republican voters, and the party will be requiring participants to show identification to vote. Voting will also be precinct based, meaning caucusgoers will have to cast their votes at a location near their home address.Who’s in the running?
Former President Donald Trump is joined by pastor Ryan Binkley. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum have suspended their campaigns. Learn more about the candidates below. When will voting take place?
