Monday marked the start of Nevada's 83rd legislative session — the 120-day biennial gathering of Silver State lawmakers, lobbyists, journalists and government officials in Carson City.

Family and friends joined legislators on the floor of both chambers for photos.

Children ran through the halls of the recently remodeled 54-year-old building.

And Nevada Supreme Court Chief Justice Douglas Herndon administered the oath of office taken by the 42 members of the Assembly and the 10 new and re-elected senators. Twenty-two of the session's lawmakers are new to the Legislature.

In 2024, Democrats lost their supermajority in the lower house after Republicans successfully flipped a competitive district on the southern edge of Las Vegas in November. Republicans hold 15 seats.

In the Senate, Democrats hold 13 of 21 seats.

Without supermajorities, Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo's veto pen looms large. In 2023, the first-year governor rejected a record-breaking 75 bills in his first session.

For The Nevada Independent, photojournalist David Calvert covered the session's first day.
