Though the number of Nevada union workers has declined in recent years, collective bargaining groups representing teachers, laborers and electrical workers continue to play an outsized role in the Nevada political system.

While some groups, such as the Las Vegas Culinary Workers Union, played a prominent and public role in electing Democrats through volunteer workers and voting numbers — most notably in electing newly minted Rep. Ruben Kihuen — during the 2016 campaign cycle, unions throughout the state played an equally important behind-the-scenes role — funding the campaigns of dozens of legislative Democrats.

A Nevada Independent analysis of campaign contributions between 2015 and the start of the 2017 Legislature show that elected lawmakers took in roughly $1.69 million from a wide variety of unions and collective bargaining units, both inside and outside Nevada.

While a handful of Republicans received union campaign contributions — Assembly Minority Leader Paul Anderson received a total of $8,500 from various unions — the vast majority of campaign contributions went to dozens of Assembly and Senate Democrats, who now are being lobbied by advocates working for the same groups who helped fund their campaigns.

Democratic leadership in both houses took in massive fundraising hauls during the campaign cycle, and a significant portion of that for both Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson ($55,011) and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford ($92,657.14) came from union sources.

And union money may have made the difference in determining control of the state Senate, with the top two donation recipients — Nicole Cannizzaro and Joyce Woodhouse — narrowly winning their races by slim one or two-point margins. The third top recipient, Democratic Assemblyman Skip Daly, won his race by a mere 38 votes.

While most of the funds came from in-state groups, tens of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions flowed in from out-of-state union mostly from California but including groups in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Idaho.
