First lady Jill Biden, Jane Fonda launch Seniors for Biden-Harris in Reno

First lady Jill Biden told seniors gathered in Reno on Friday that this election is “certainly not about age” but is rather about the “character of the person leading our country.”

The event, held before a crowd of about 200 at the Plumas Park Gym, featured celebrity guest Jane Fonda and marked the launch of a new Seniors for Biden-Harris initiative that will involve events, running advertisements on TV programs that are popular among seniors, and providing resources and opportunities to support the campaign.

It comes as age is considered a big liability for both presidential candidates — one poll from February found that 86 percent of Americans believe Biden, who is 81, is too old to serve another term, and 59 percent believe both Biden and former President Donald Trump, who is 78, are too old to serve again.

Cathi Tuni, chair for the Paiute-Shoshone Tribe of the Fallon Reservation and Colony and a breast cancer survivor, said that “because of Joe Biden, I’m able to afford medication that I rely on every day.” Tuni also says that her mother is on Medicaid, and that because of President Biden, she too can afford quality care.

Several speakers asserted that Trump wants to take away Social Security benefits, while Biden continues to push for health care-related benefits such as capping insulin sales at $35 per month.

Fonda, 86, said that throughout her years of activism, she has never been asked to participate in a campaign for president, but that she is excited because she will “do anything to get Joe Biden re-elected.”

“While Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are fighting to ensure that every American can live and retire with dignity, [Trump] is helping the super rich,” Fonda said, adding that Trump called Social Security a “Ponzi scheme” and said that he “will always prioritize corporate interests and himself over the interests of average American people.”

Jill Biden described her husband as “a man of great kindness, integrity, and character” who’s “willing to get to work every day to make our future better.”
