The Nevada Republican Party is launching a digital ad campaign targeting Democratic Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro over a decision by legislative budget committees to slash $30 million from a school safety budget.

The ad, which states “Students aren’t safe under Cannizzaro’s watch,” targets a vote made by legislative money committees last week to severely cut back funding for school safety programs, including security infrastructure upgrades and eliminated a rural school threat assessment training budget item.

Those budget reductions came after lawmakers and Gov. Steve Sisolak announced plans to transfer funds from a recreational marijuana tax entirely towards the state’s main K-12 budget account, which was originally allocated to fund the Millennium Scholarship and several school safety initiatives.

That move and subsequent budget cuts have attracted criticism from the state party and legislative Republicans, who have criticized the cuts as unnecessary. The state’s final budget still needs to be approved by the full Legislature, which will happen at the end of the 120-day session.

“Nicole Cannizzaro is putting Nevada children at risk with her proposal to raid the school safety budget,” Nevada Republican Party Executive Director Will Sexauer said in an emailed statement. “Our new advertisement is just one of many tools we will use to stop Sen. Cannizzaro’s dangerous scheme.”

Cannizzaro, who defeated former Assemblywoman Victoria Seaman by about 2 percentage points in 2016, represents a competitive Las Vegas Senate district up again in 2020 with close political party registration.
