Asher Killian, who currently serves as legislative counsel, was unanimously selected Tuesday by a bipartisan committee of legislators to become the next director of the Legislative Counsel Bureau. 

In the legislative counsel role, he served as the chief legal adviser to the Legislature and led administration of the legal division. As director, Killian will serve as the executive head of the bureau, which provides legal, fiscal, research and administrative support and has about 300 permanent staff.

He is replacing acting director Roger Wilkerson, who has been serving in the role since late 2025.

Killian has worked at the bureau since 2007, advancing through multiple leadership roles from deputy legislative counsel to chief deputy legislative counsel. He has also served as committee counsel on education, government affairs and redistricting issues.

He earned multiple degrees from the University of Oklahoma, including a law degree, before completing a Master of Public Administration at the University of Nevada, Reno. He is admitted to practice law in Nevada and Oklahoma.

Assembly Majority Leader Sandra Jauregui (D-Las Vegas) praised Killian's work and bipartisan reputation. 

"He has consistently earned my trust and the trust of legislators on both sides of the aisle by approaching his work with fairness, humility and unwavering commitment to this institution rather than to any individual, any one chamber or any one party," Jauregui said.

In a statement to The Nevada Independent, Killian said he was honored by the appointment and reflected on his career in public service.

"This is truly my life's work, and it's an immense privilege to have a job where I can come to work every day doing something I love and supporting an incredible group of people who do extraordinary work serving the Legislature and the people of Nevada. I am humbled to have been entrusted with this opportunity to spend the rest of my career supporting the Nevada Legislature, as well as the folks who serve it and who serve in it, to continue the extraordinary work of generations of public servants who have come before me," Killian said.
