Lawmakers have a long list of votes on their agenda Tuesday, including measures to freeze the growth of the Opportunity Scholarship and prevent police from detaining a person on an immigration hold unless there’s an underlying crime.

The Legislature will also hear from Republican Rep. Mark Amodei in a 5 p.m. speech.

Here’s what to watch for on Tuesday at the Legislature:

DMV budget hearings and budget closings

The budget subcommittees on public safety, natural resources and transportation will hear details of the Department of Motor Vehicles budget accounts for the system technology application redesign and for automation.

The subcommittees will also close several other DMV budgets, including the Division of Management Services & Programs, hearings, the license plate factory, and central services.

The subcommittees meet at 8 a.m.

SB218, SB244: Raising penalties for domestic violence

Members of the Assembly Judiciary Committee will review SB218, a bill that raises penalties for people who commit domestic violence.

The bill raises the penalty for violating a temporary or extended restraining order from a misdemeanor, which is punishable by not more than six months in jail. Under the bill, violating a temporary restraining order would be a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail and violating an extended order to a Category C felony, punishable with 1-5 years in prison.

The bill is sponsored by Democratic Sens. Nicole Cannizzaro and Pat Spearman.

They’ll also hear SB244, a bill sponsored by Cannizzaro that makes it a misdemeanor to violate a “stay away order” directing someone to maintain distance from the home or workplace of a victim and to refrain from contacting that person.

The Assembly Judiciary Committee meets at 8 a.m.

SB126, SB159: Principals reapplying to their jobs, safe exposure to the sun

Members of the Assembly Education Committee will discuss SB126, which would repeal a 2015 law that requires school administrators to re-apply for their jobs every five years.

They’ll also review SB159, which would require schools to adopt a policy regarding safe exposure to the sun.

The committee meets at 1:30 p.m.
