Health care is always a many-tentacled topic for Nevada’s part-time citizen Legislature to tackle, and the 2017 session is no different.

Between ongoing federal uncertainty over the future of health care policy and a cadre of complex bills ranging from price controls on diabetes drugs to setting limits on how much emergency rooms can charge out-of-network patients, lawmakers have their hands full.

Businesses and individuals in the medical industry, from insurance giants to individual doctors, didn’t hesitate to open up their pocketbooks during the 2016 campaign, doling out more than $916,000 to individual legislators between 2015 and the start of the legislative session.

The biggest individual donor in the health care field, Sunrise Hospital, gave lawmakers more than $107,000 through the 2016 campaign cycle. Other major donors include the Nevada Association of Health Facilities ($52,500), the Nevada Hospital Association ($70,111) and the Nevada Health Care Association ($56,000).

Democrats on the whole received $535,000 from individuals and businesses in the health care and medical profession, while Republicans (who make up 24 of the 63 members of the Legislature) received slightly more than $386,000 from the industry over the election cycle. Every legislator reported receiving at least one donation from the health care industry.

Lawmakers who chair the committees on health and human services also received significant donations from the industry, with Democratic Assemblyman Mike Sprinkle bringing in $24,250 and Democratic Sen. Pat Spearman raising $26,550.

But the largest single recipients of campaign dollars from the industry were a pair of state senators — Majority Leader Aaron Ford, who raised $88,820, and Republican Sen. Heidi Gansert, who before entering public office founded a medical practice management business, is married to a doctor and received $77,574.

Republican Assemblyman James Oscarson, a nurse and former chair of the Assembly Health and Human Services committee, raised more than $63,000 in fending off a tough primary and general election challenge after supporting a $1.1 billion tax increase championed by Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Below, we’ve totaled the major donations made to members of the Legislature by individuals, trade groups and businesses in the medical industry. As always, we’ve triple checked our numbers and math, but if anything seems off feel free to contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].
