There are numerous attorneys and legal professionals in the Legislature — and even more of them in the scores of campaign contributors.

Lawyers and law firms shelled out more than $1.03 million to candidates over the 2015 to 2016 campaign cycle, with Democrats receiving the lion’s share ($852,000) of contributions while Republicans brought in $176,000.

That’s also not counting the various law firms that also serve as lobbyists for a variety of corporate interests, including Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, McDonald Carano and Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie. Donations from those individual firms, as well as their clients were detailed in earlier stories.

The largest donor was the Citizens for Justice Trust — the political action committee for the Nevada Justice Association, which represents trial lawyers — which doled out nearly $324,000 during the election cycle. Other top donors included some of the top law firms in the state: Eglet Prince ($89,500), Dickinson Wright ($21,500) and Bradley Drendel & Jeanney ($17,500).

Top recipients consisted mainly of attorneys, with Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford, a partner at Eglet Prince, coming in on top with more than $86,000 in donations from those in the legal sector. Other top recipients included Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro, a deputy district attorney who received more than $68,000, and Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson, a family law attorney at Surratt Law Practice, received more than $63,000 from the industry.

Only two of the top 10 recipients — Sens. Joyce Woodhouse and Heidi Gansert — aren’t employed in the legal sphere. Both were embroiled in contested state Senate races during the 2016 election cycle.

Below, we’ve listed out some of the major donations from lawyers and law firms that were given to at least two lawmakers and totaled at least $1,000. As always, we’ve triple checked our numbers and math, but if anything seems off feel free to contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].
