Ask state lawmakers what they have in common with their 62 colleagues, and they’ll probably mention a love for Nevada or desire to craft good public policy.

The might be true, but there’s another thread that ties each Nevada lawmaker together — they’ve all taken money from the state’s powerful gaming industry.

Casinos, resorts and individual executives gave more than $1.9 million directly to the 63 members of the Legislature during the 2016 election, almost a fifth of the $10.8 million aggregate total reported by all Assembly and Senate members.

That total only represents direct donations from the gaming industry to lawmakers, and doesn’t include any potential industry money transferred from political action committees and inter-candidate transfers that also made up a significant chunk of contributions.

At least seven casinos gave over six figures to lawmakers, led by MGM Resorts ($351,000) and the Las Vegas Sands ($310,500). A majority of donations — $1.07 million — came into Democrats, but Republican, who make up the minority in Carson City, reported receiving more than $839,000 throughout the 2016 campaign cycle.

The top recipient of casino dollars was a Republican — freshman Sen. Heidi Gansert. Gansert, a former Republican Assembly member who defeated attorney Devon Reese in 2016, raised more than $162,000 from casino industry groups during the campaign, including $30,000 from various properties belonging to the Las Vegas Sands.

Other major recipients included mostly legislative leadership or individual lawmakers who won competitive races. Behind Gansert, top recipients included Democratic Senate Majority Leader Aaron Ford ($90,750), Republican Sen. Scott Hammond ($88,000) and Democratic Assembly Speaker Jason Frierson ($74,250).

Nevada law prohibits more contributions of more than $10,000 per election cycle for a primary and general election, but several casinos were able to get around the limits by sending the donations in through different properties or businesses.
