U.S. Congress

Representative In Congress, District 2

Why you should care

For the first time in eight years, Nevada is guaranteed to send a new representative to Congress. After incumbent Mark Amodei announced his surprise retirement from the state’s only solidly Republican district, more than two dozen candidates jumped in the race to replace him. Despite moving to the district just this spring, David Flippo (R), who swapped races after previously aiming for the 4th District seat, won the bitter Republican primary with his MAGA bonafides, a no-holds-barred campaign and a last-minute endorsement from President Donald Trump. Democrats say his victory presents a prime opportunity to flip the Northern Nevada seat that they’ve never won. Their candidate is former Assembly Majority Leader Teresa Benitez-Thompson (D-Reno), who’s running on standing up to Trump and bringing federal funds back to the state.

Nevada Board of Regents

Why it matters

The board is composed of 13 elected regents who set policies and approve budgets for Nevada’s entire public system of higher education: four community colleges, one state university, two doctorate-granting research universities and one research institute. The Nevada System of Higher Education serves more than 100,000 students.

The board is also responsible for hiring the system’s chancellor and presidents for the institutions.

Why you should care

As in states across the country, colleges are facing pressure from a Trump administration suspicious of academia and challenges in proving the value of increasingly expensive college degrees.

The board recently faced backlash from students for voting to raise tuition and fees to address a looming budget shortfall attributed to faculty pay raises.

Two regents are running for re-election, and Regent Pete Goicoechea is running for his first full term after being appointed to the board in 2024.

County Commission

Why it matters

The Washoe County Commission is the main governing body for Nevada’s second-largest county, where members have the authority to pass local laws. They are also tasked with certifying elections — a responsibility that came under fire after it initially voted against certifying recount results two years ago. The county also interacts with local municipalities, such as the Reno and Sparks city councils, and there is a growing desire to make services among those local governments more connected. Commissioners can serve three, four-year terms.

Why you should care

Three of the five seats are up for re-election this year, two of which will see a new commissioner. That includes an open seat in District 5 and in District 2, where incumbent Mike Clark lost re-election to Jon Killoran, a former broadcast journalist.

School Trustees

Why it matters

The Washoe County School Board is made up of seven elected members who oversee the district of nearly 60,000 students. They make budget and policy decisions, including approving pay raises for staff, and are responsible for hiring and managing the district’s superintendent, but they don’t direct day-to-day operational decisions for schools such as calling a snow day.

Why you should care

Like the Clark County School District, Washoe County schools are experiencing an enrollment decline, and the district recently lost its status as the second-largest district in the state as enrollment in charter schools has grown.

The enrollment decline has also meant less revenue, prompting the school board to look for areas of the budget to cut to avoid a deficit next year.

The district is also experiencing high superintendent turnover. The school board recently approved a new superintendent after Joe Ernst announced he was retiring.

Reno city races

Mayor, City Of RenoNonpartisan

Why it matters

The Reno mayor leads the city council of Nevada’s third-largest city. They hold one out of seven council votes and also hold sway in setting council meeting agendas and determining the overall vision of the city’s future and helping craft the city budget. Mayors hold four-year terms and cannot serve for more than 12 years. The top two candidates in the June primary will advance to the November general election.

Why you should care

This is the first time the mayoral seat has been open since incumbent Hillary Schieve took office in 2014. It comes at a time when the city is in a precarious financial position that will require long-term changes to avoid budget cuts every year — and the two candidates have different approaches on addressing that. Kate Marshall, a Democrat who was formerly Nevada’s treasurer and lieutenant governor, wants to do a full programmatic audit of the city’s operations to see where costs could be cut. Councilmember Kathleen Taylor, a Republican serving in the nonpartisan position since 2022, wants to get rid of “nice-to-have” spending. The race also comes at a time when the availability of affordable housing and the future of the downtown area are top of mind for Renoites. Marshall coasted to victory in the June primary, while Taylor narrowly finished in second to advance to the general.

Sparks city races

Mayor, City Of SparksNonpartisan

Why it matters

The city council for Nevada’s fifth-largest city is responsible for making policy decisions on everything from data centers to land zoning in a region with limited available land. The mayor does not have voting power but can veto policies. The election comes as Sparks faces budget challenges and increasing demand for housing. Council members are elected to four-year terms and can serve no more than three terms, while the mayor does not have term limits.

Why you should care
