clark county commission

Why it matters

The Clark County Commission is the overarching bureaucratic body that supervises county operations in the greater Las Vegas Valley. County services include overseeing airports, child protective services, marriage licensing, rental assistance, the coroner, courts, parks and more. The commission also oversees unincorporated areas such as the Las Vegas Strip, Spring Valley, Enterprise and parts of Summerlin. The board also administers the county’s roughly $10 billion budget, roughly 10,000 county employees and a population of more than 2 million people countywide.

Why you should care

The board has seven partisan members elected every four years and is largely Democratic — there is only one Republican county commissioner currently serving.

That Republican presence could expand depending on who wins the District F seat, which is open after Democrat Justin Jones, facing a controversy over deleted text messages surrounding a real estate development near Red Rock, announced he wouldn’t seek re-election. The two Republicans running for the seat are Assm. Heidi Kasama (R-Las Vegas) and Albert Mack, grandson of casino magnate Jerome Mack.

If that seat flips, the board would have two Republican county commissioners, more than it’s had in more than 10 years. The last Republican commissioner the county had before April Becker was elected in 2024 was the long-serving Bruce Woodbury, who retired in 2009.

Clark County is tackling new issues after tourism declined in 2025 — and the region aims to diversify through sports, entertainment and new development. The board determines how the county’s budget is allocated and what sort of projects are being approved.

las vegas city council

Why it matters

Why it matters: The city council is a seven-member group, including mayor, that oversees a city of approximately 700,000 people and a budget of more than $2 billion. There are three seats open for election in 2026, with one council member running opposed.

Why you should care

The city faces debts and a budget deficit from settlements related to the Badlands lawsuit. Las Vegas has to pay more than $600 million to the developer following years of litigation related to the construction of a planned housing development in the city. The council and the mayor will have to find a way to address these budget shortfalls on top of all the other needs of residents. Las Vegas is facing economic uncertainty as the tourism and gaming industry have taken a slight dip this year, bringing economic diversity to the forefront of the conversation. Apart from that, Las Vegas is facing a growing homeless population and water conservation questions.

north las vegas

Why it matters

The mayor is considered one of the five voting members of the North Las Vegas City Council, which sets a budget, funds a police department and oversees a staff of 500 employees in the city of nearly 300,000 people.

Why you should care

Council Member Scott Black, who is running against Nevada State Democratic Party Chair Assm. Daniele Monroe-Moreno, is currently facing a lawsuit that claims he is ineligible to run for mayor because of term limits. Black has served nine years on city council because of a bureaucratic change and will serve 13 years if elected, a year longer than the 12-year term limit allows. North Las Vegas is growing incredibly fast, and is looking to bring new development to the region. With the construction of new industrial parks in North Las Vegas on the outskirts of the city, the freeing up public lands is also a question of concern. Mayoral candidates have discussed how to navigate the new growth and ensure that it is sustainable.

henderson

Why it matters

The city council includes four city council members as well as the mayor. Henderson, one of the fastest growing cities in the Las Vegas Valley, has roughly 370,000 residents, its own police force and more than 2,000 city employees.

Why you should care

The Henderson City Council has faced public spats and conflicts between council members and the mayor over the past couple of years. Some residents have called the situation "embarrassing.” One of the key figures in these conflicts is Council Member Carrie Cox, whose spot is open — Cox has thrown her hat in the ring for re-election and is facing two opponents. Immigration has become a key topic for residents in Henderson due to the city’s detention center contract with ICE — people protested the contract at a council meeting earlier this year and the city is currently renegotiating the agreement.

Representative In Congress, District 1

Why you should care

Once a deeply Democratic district in the heart of Las Vegas, CD1 is now considered a battleground. Incumbent Dina Titus (D-NV) is the most liberal member of the congressional delegation and has recently gotten attention for her efforts to undo a tax change that could force gamblers to pay the government more, even when they lose. However, several challengers are trying to unseat her, including State Sen. Carrie Buck (R-Henderson), an educator and charter school leader who outraised Titus two quarters in a row and is endorsed by President Donald Trump.

Representative In Congress, District 3

Why you should care

On paper, Congressional District 3 is considered the state’s most competitive district, but incumbent Susie Lee, a moderate Democrat, has repeatedly managed to best Republican challengers. This year, four Republicans are competing to take on the House Democratic Caucus’ Battleground leadership representative, including video game composer Marty O’Donnell, who ran in 2024 and has the endorsement of President Donald Trump this cycle, and former Ambassador to Iceland Jeff Gunter. clark county school board

Why it matters

The Clark County School Board is made up of 11 members, seven of whom are elected by voters. The board oversees the state’s largest school district with under 300,000 students. They make budget and policy decisions, including approving pay increases for staff and school consolidations, and are responsible for hiring and managing the superintendent, but do not handle day-to-day operations inside of schools.

Why you should care

The district is facing a precipitous enrollment decline, which means less per-pupil revenue coming in. The district has already begun making decisions to address these budget constraints.

Last year, the district announced it was reducing staff positions for the 2026-27 school year because of budget constraints.

Another step the district could consider is whether to close schools that are underutilized.

There’s also more pressure for school districts to improve student performance following legislation from Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo and Democratic leaders including Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro that demand greater accountability from districts for student proficiency and consequences if they don’t meet standards.

All three incumbents are running for re-election, but of the three, two are only facing a single challenger, meaning both of the races will automatically proceed to the general election to be decided then.
