The crisp air Saturday morning after Halloween was buzzing with excitement in Carson City, where thousands gathered downtown for the annual Nevada Day parade to celebrate 161 years of statehood. 

Carson Street was filled with floats, marching bands, emergency vehicles and local groups that honored Nevada’s heritage and history. 

Blue and silver colors filled the crowds. It seemed like just about everywhere you looked someone was waving a Nevada flag. 

While the parade this year was one day after Halloween, many children still wore their costumes. 

Nevada was born amid the Civil War, becoming the 36th state on Oct. 31, 1864. Its quick admission to the Union helped secure President Abraham Lincoln’s re-election and solidified support for the Union cause, earning it the nickname “Battle Born State.”

For many Nevadans, Nevada Day celebrates more than just statehood. It’s a reflection of pride and a sense of community that brings people together year after year.
