Focus: The Energy Choice Initiative, which will be on the ballot as Question 3

Who’s paying for it: Nevadans for Affordable, Clean Energy Choices, the primary PAC supporting the ballot question

Size of buy: Part of a $700,000 buy

When it starts: Sept. 17

Where it’s running: Statewide

The gist: The ad features a clip from a 2016 interview with NV Energy CEO Paul Caudill where the utility chairman promised that the electric utility wouldn’t get involved in the fight over the Energy Choice Initiative — a proposed constitutional amendment that would require Nevada switch to a competitive, retail electric market by 2023.

It contrasts Caudill’s 2016 comments with news from February that a group backed by the utility was prepared to spend up to $30 million to defeat the ballot measure in 2018. NV Energy has been the primary donor to the Coalition to Defeat Question 3 — contributing close to $12.7 million so far — but it did not directly contribute to any groups opposing the ballot measure in 2016.
