Clark County School District Trustee Erin Cranor

Clark County School Board trustee Erin Cranor announced Wednesday that she's leaving the governing board of the nation's fifth largest school district to attend law school in Utah.

Cranor, who was in the middle of her second 4-year term representing District G, said in a statement that she would no longer have time to serve on board after being awarded a fellowship to earn a joint law degree focused on social justice and civil rights at Brigham Young University.

"I am very excited about this opportunity to qualify myself further to make a positive difference in education over the rest of my life," she said in a statement.

Cranor said she planned to resign effective August 16, and her replacement will be appointed by the remaining members of the board "at a later date." State law doesn't lay out a strict deadline for filling a vacancy, and only requires the board to advertise the open position for at least two weeks before holding a public meeting to fill the position.

In a statement, the district said it will announce details of the application process soon.

Cranor was first elected to the board in 2010, and won a close victory over Joe Spencer in 2014. She previously served as president of the seven-member board. Her district, which represents portions of east Las Vegas, will be up for election in 2018.

Cranor is also the only trustee member of the Community Implementation Council, which is the group overseeing the district reorganization effort.
