Be an Indy Intern

***

When you start an internship at The Indy, you start with editors who trust you to write larger projects or breaking news, who help you prepare for interviews with prominent figures and give you the feedback needed to become a better writer. You won’t ever feel alone walking into assignments because your editors will have communicated with you on what their vision for coverage is, what the issues are and why the coverage matters to the public. This has been a fulfilling experience from the beginning to end and you come out of the the internship with a deeper understanding of the state.

Annie Vong, 2025 intern

Being an intern at The Nevada Independent is such a jumpstart for your career. From Day 1, you'll be writing high impact stories on local policy, and you'll have an amazing team of editors behind you guiding you along the way and helping you learn and grow as a reporter. Everyone at The Indy is always happy to help you, and working in such a collaborative newsroom gave me the confidence and capacity to take on any story and ask for help when I need it. I wouldn't change a thing about my experience at The Indy. From start to finish, you'll leave with a portfolio you're proud of and a team of people cheering you on."

Current Opportunities

2026-2027 News Reporting Fellow

The Nevada Independent fellowship is an intensive, hands-on opportunity to learn from the experienced reporters and editors at our nonprofit, nonpartisan news outlet. From day one, fellows will be challenged to work on a broad range of sophisticated stories that explore how politics and policy affect everyday Nevadans, with plenty of mentorship and support along the way. The experience spans a key election season in a swing state and the state’s biennial legislative session, and fellows are encouraged to propose further beats and specialties that meet the needs of the newsroom.

Fellows will also work to present and promote their reporting in multiple formats, including through TikTok and other vertical video platforms, and learn to produce rigorous fact checks. Because the fellowship is a key pipeline from which we have hired full-time reporters, we are seeking serious candidates who aspire to journalism careers and have had successful internships or work experiences in newsrooms in the past.

Please submit a resume, cover letter explaining your interest in the position, and 3-5 work samples at this link. Applications will be accepted at least through Feb. 6, 2026, or until a suitable candidate is found.
