Did Nevada Democrats shift staff and funds away from the state Democratic Party after progressive candidates were elected to leadership positions?
YES
In March 2021, progressive candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America were elected to all five of the Nevada Democratic Party’s leadership positions. In response, the party’s staff, along with its consultants, resigned. Anticipating the loss, staff transferred $450,000 out of the party’s coffers.
The new party leadership were involved and inspired by the Bernie Sanders campaign, which won Nevada’s Democratic presidential primary in 2020.
Since the takeover, divisions between the progressive and moderate wings have plagued the party. A new round of elections, which will determine the future control of the party, will be held on March 4, 2023.
