The Establishment strikes...a deal

Two of the event hosts are consultants to a man who had a bitter primary against the man being honored and a primary against another one of the hosts.

Another host is a conspiracy theorist who tweets about debunked nonsense such as the Seth Rich story and advocates for the outlaw Bundys to be pardoned.

Yet another has often been the bane of the Establishment as the GOP's Nevada boss, one who once had to relinquish a state sinecure, was once found guilty of ethics violations and set up a slush fund that diverted money away from the party.

All of these folks are gathering Monday evening to raise money in advance of the Clark County GOP chairman elections for their choice, Carl Bunce, who once led a party takeover by Ron Paul forces and recently described the Russia scandal as being manufactured by the media.

Ah, the neverending entertainment machine that is Nevada Republican Party politics.

This is a clear sign that the Establishment, which has fought Bunce & Co. for years, knows it needs to bring the right into the fold to help Sen. Dean Heller (and others, too, including incipient lieutenant governor hopeful Michael Roberson). Bunce helped the scandal-tarred Michael McDonald, who is on the invite, become chairman. And this GOP also elected Diana Orrock, also on the host committee and who tweets all manner of strange stuff, as national committeewoman.

Mike Slanker and Jeremy Hughes of November, Inc., are consultants to Roberson and Heller, and have clearly begun a move to bring the Bunce/McDonald/Orrock faction into the tent so they are not trying to tear it down. Bunce is a smart organizer, and Heller and Roberson, should they face primary challenges, will need all the help they can get.

(One more angle: The event is being organized by Ryan Erwin's shop, Red Rock Strategies. Erwin and Slanker used to be partners and still work together from time to time.)

It may be blatantly hypocritical for them to embrace this faction considering the fights of the past. But there also is a certain brilliance to this big tent approach, although I would caution that some of the folks being embraced are not the most trustworthy and could turn on them at anytime. (See: The Fable of the Scorpion and the Frog.)

The invitation ostensibly sends the message: "Look at all the past GOP officials who are supporting Carl!" But the real message is this: The Establishment capitulates.
