Employees of the General Services Administration (GSA) in Nevada have been fired, according to an email employees received Monday night obtained by The Nevada Independent.

Approximately 12 people based in Las Vegas and Reno were fired, according to the office of Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV). Cortez Masto first raised the issue in a series of X posts Monday night, saying the agency’s entire Nevada workforce had been let go.

“This email serves as notice that your organizational unit is being abolished along with all positions in the unit — including yours,” the email from a GSA administrator to employees reads.

The GSA is the government agency in charge of supportive operations for the federal government — most notably, the procurement and management of federal buildings. GSA employees manage five federal buildings in Nevada:

  • The Carson City Federal Building,
  • Las Vegas’ Foley Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse and Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse, and
  • Reno’s C. Clifton Young Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse and Bruce R. Thompson U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building.

In addition to federal judges’ chambers and courtrooms, these buildings also host employees from more than 20 federal agencies and programs, including the Federal Highway Administration, Department of Labor and Transportation Security Administration. The District of Nevada’s U.S. Bankruptcy Court, U.S. Trustee Program, U.S. Probation Services, U.S. Martial Services and Tax Court also are headquartered in federal buildings in the state.

“These are the workers that maintain our federal buildings and courthouses, including their security systems - and [President Donald Trump] wants them all gone,” Cortez Masto wrote on X. “This is outrageous!”

The GSA press office did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday, and a call to the GSA Nevada Field Office went unanswered. Cortez Masto’s office said the senator has not yet been directly informed of the firings by the GSA administrator.

The email received by fired GSA employees stated that they would be placed on administrative leave starting Monday, and would receive an official notice of reduction in force in 30 days, starting a 60-day clock of paid administrative leave before they are separated from the agency.

The move comes as President Donald Trump and Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) head Elon Musk are slashing federal spending and personnel, particularly at the GSA. DOGE’s savings list — which numerous media outlets have found to be riddled with errors — notes that it has terminated GSA leases for three properties in Nevada. The agency says it has ended leases for a Social Security Administration office in Las Vegas, and both an Indian Health Service and a Bureau of Indian Affairs office in Elko, totaling nearly $222,000 in savings.

Acting GSA Administrator Stephen Ehikian announced on Feb. 24 that the agency would be conducting a reduction in force in compliance with a Trump executive order to reform the federal workforce and was preparing for large-scale personnel cuts.

The GSA has also eliminated the unit responsible for helping build and maintain government agencies’ digital technology — including the IRS Direct File program, which allows taxpayers in certain states, including Nevada, to file their taxes electronically directly with the IRS for free.

The Trump administration has also ordered the GSA to initiate the sale of “non-core” properties — a list that includes the Carson City Federal Building.
