FACT BRIEF

Does Canada have a higher tax burden than Nevada?

By Kate Reynolds on 12/12/2025

Yes.

Canada’s tax burden is higher than any U.S. state’s, including Nevada’s.

Tax burdens indicate the share of income spent on federal, state and local taxes.

In 2024, the average Canadian family spent about 42% of its income on taxes, according to the think tank the Fraser Institute.

The state and local tax burden for the middle 20% of Nevadans was 8.6% in 2024, according to the Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy. Combined with a federal tax burden of 15% for the middle 20% of Americans, Nevadans spent an average of 23.6% of their income on taxes.

In 2024, the middle 20% of Americans spent about 26% of their income on taxes.

Nevada has one of the most regressive taxation systems in the nation: Last year, the bottom 20% of earners dedicated approximately 4 times more of their income toward taxes than the top 1% of earners.
