The results of Nevada’s Republican presidential primary will have no effect in awarding delegates to the party’s national convention, which is where the nominee for the general election is chosen.
The Legislature passed a bill in 2021 requiring parties to hold a presidential primary if more than two candidates file for the contest. However, state parties can allocate party delegates any way they choose, and the state GOP has opted to award delegates based on the results of a party-run caucus.
The GOP prohibited candidates from participating in both the primary and caucus. Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will be on the primary ballot, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump are participating in the caucus.
The primary also includes former Vice President Mike Pence and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, though both candidates suspended their campaigns. Voters can also vote for “None of These” candidates.
