Nevada’s delegates in the U.S. House of Representatives cast party-line votes for the biggest piece of legislation under their consideration this week — the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Republican Rep. Mark Amodei sided with the majority of his party and threw his support behind the bill, which passed Thursday on a 227-205 vote. All House Democrats opposed the bill, as did 13 Republicans. Most of the Republicans who voted against the bill represent high-tax states that could be negatively affected by it.

The tax-reform bill cuts the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, does away with many itemized deductions and could increase taxes for the middle class over time. The package is far from a done deal: The Senate is working on its own version of a tax-reform bill, meaning the two sides ultimately will need to compromise to enact any changes into law.

As expected, Democrat Reps. Jacky Rosen, Ruben Kihuen and Dina Titus bashed the Republican-led effort in the House.

“The House Republican tax bill is nothing more than a handout to big corporations and the wealthiest Americans that unfairly sticks working and middle-class families with the bill,” Kihuen said in a statement after the House vote.

Nevada’s delegates in the House, however, weren’t entirely at odds this week: They were unified in a third of the roll call votes, including for a resolution that lays out the United States’ policy toward Yemen.

Meanwhile, Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto and Dean Heller agreed to three presidential nominations this week during roll call votes. They disagreed on three others.

For a full rundown of what measures our state’s delegates threw their support behind this week, check out The Nevada Independent’s congressional vote tracker and other information below.
