Laxalt's planned 19-city gubernatorial announcement tour misses stop in rural Fernley, peeving locals
When Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt makes his gubernatorial aspirations official in two weeks, he’ll do so by kicking off a 9-day, 17-county tour designed to visit just about every corner of Nevada.
Except for Fernley.
The rural Nevada town, with a population close to 20,000, isn’t on the list of 19 cities, towns and communities that Laxalt has scheduled to visit as part of his weeklong tour likely announcing his gubernatorial bid, delayed a month after the shooting on the Las Vegas Strip that left 58 dead and more than 500 wounded.
It has elicited a somewhat hurt response from Fernley representatives, especially as the conservative attorney general will likely have to drive through the town as he goes from a Wednesday fundraiser in Reno to an event in tiny Lovelock the next morning.
Fernley Chamber of Commerce head Kelly Brye said it was “disheartening” that Laxalt would skip a visit to the town, and touted the city’s proximity to the Reno-Tahoe Industrial Center and the Tesla Gigafactory as well other large businesses moving to northern Nevada as evidence that gubernatorial candidates should pay attention to the city’s voters.
“As we look forward towards 2018, the voters of Fernley will look at our priorities and the agenda of the candidates,”Brye said in a statement. “The Fernley Chamber of Commerce wants to extend an invitation to those running but it is disheartening when candidates drive through with little concern for our community and our 13,000+ voters. Fernley is open for business and our door is always open.”
The snub was enough to elicit a heated response from Fernley lobbyist Nick Vander Poel, a Republican who tweeted to Fernley residents on Monday that Laxalt “has no interest in you or your vote.”
Laxalt’s campaign did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Regardless, Fernley is still deep-red political territory — Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by a massive 67 to 26 percent margin in Lyon County during the 2016 election.
Fernley residents who want to see Laxalt can either make the 60-mile drive to nearby Lovelock, or the shorter 36-mile drive to Fallon.
