When one election ends, another begins.

The state’s primary election on Tuesday brought 142,509 people to the polls. That’s on top of the 152,437 residents who cast their ballots during early voting and the 25,366 who sent absentee ballots. Total turnout: nearly 23 percent of registered voters.

The night ended with victories for gubernatorial hopefuls Steve Sisolak, a Democrat, and Adam Laxalt, a Republican. Those two will face off in the November general election.

But for several hours Tuesday night — before the general election battle revs up — candidates across the state watched results trickle in, signaling a celebration or defeat. Three Nevada Independent photographers captured the emotions on display as candidates cast their votes and, later, watched hard-fought primary battles come to a close.
