IndyTalks: The Plight of Local News

News Deserts and the threat to local news

Local news - particularly in small and rural communities - is threatened with extinction. What are news deserts? How do they affect access to information and how do we address this vacuum of coverage? How is this same phenomenon affecting major markets like Reno and Las Vegas also?

Join us for an engaging evening discussing this topic featuring a screening of the 30 minute documentary -  For The Record, the story of The Canadian Record, a rural newspaper in the Texas panhandle.

The screening will be followed by a 60-minute discussion about the challenges facing local news, especially in Nevada moderated by Jon Ralston, Founder and CEO of the Nevada Independent and including:

Evan Smith, Senior Advisor of the Emerson Collective and Texas Tribune
Laurie Ezzell Brown, Publisher and Editor of The Canadian Record
Heather Courtney, Director and Producer

This event will be held at the
Beverly Theater in Las Vegas on Wednesday, September 13th

Cash bar and concessions will be available starting at 5:30 p.m.
Come mix and mingle for happy hour!
Main event doors open at 6:30 P.M.
We expect to wrap by 8:00 p.m.
