Joe Ernst — hired as Washoe County School District’s new superintendent on Tuesday — will make $30,000 less than his predecessor.
But the Washoe County School District plans to make up that salary difference with incentives, including a 5 percent bonus if he stays longer than three years and an additional 8 percent bonus if Ernst stays four years.
These incentives come after former Superintendent Susan Enfield — who was making $350,900 — resigned in February after less than two years.
The board said Ernst is also receiving less pay because he is less experienced. Though the former district chief continuous improvement officer has worked with the district for three decades, July 8 will be Ernst’s first day as a superintendent. Enfield came to the district after a decade leading a Seattle-area school district.
