Fourteen current or former Clark County School District employees have applied to be superintendent.

Their names were made public Monday ahead of a special School Board of Trustees meeting, where board members will determine which candidates merit an interview for the district’s top job. The internal contenders — meaning people who have current or prior ties to the district — vying for an interview are:

  • Mike Barton, the Clark County School District’s chief academic officer, who has spent his entire career in Southern Nevada. He has been the subject of much lobbying on behalf of some community members and district employees who want to see him land the superintendent position.
  • Cody Claver, executive vice president and general manager of iCademy Middle East, a private, online school based in Dubai. He was a high school teacher in the Clark County School District from 1989 through 1991.
  • Mark Coleman, a former deputy director of the Clark County Association of School Administrators and Professional-Technical Employees who taught and served as a principal in the school district. He most recently worked in Colorado as a superintendent and principal in the Littlefield Unified School District.
  • Jhone Ebert, senior deputy commissioner of the New York State Education Department who previously served as the chief innovation and productivity officer in the Clark County School District.
  • Robert Gerye, a former administrative leadership development director and principal in the Clark County School District. He’s also the founder and president of The EdExcellence Group, which does consulting work for secondary school reform.
  • Deborah Gruner, a former substitute teacher in the Clark County School District. She now works in the food industry in Las Vegas.
  • John Haynal, a franchise principal in the Clark County School District who oversees three elementary schools.
  • Mollie Ann Holt, a former guest teacher and support staff member in the Clark County School District who most recently worked as a spokesperson for Dickey’s BBQ in Texas.
  • Timothy Hughes, a partner at TNTP (originally called The New Teacher Project) who works with community and education leaders across the state to improve outcomes for low-income students. He’s a graduate of the Clark County School District.
  • April Key, deputy chief human resources officer in the Clark County School District.
  • Antonio Rael, a school associate superintendent in the Clark County School District.
  • Michele Robinson, superintendent of schools for Paramus Public Schools in New Jersey. She previously taught in the Clark County School District and served as superintendent of Odyssey Charter School in Las Vegas.
  • Jesse Welsh, associate superintendent of curriculum and professional development for the Clark County School District.
  • Eva White, director of human resources and administrative services at a school district in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. She previously worked in the Clark County School District, most recently as the interim chief financial officer.

The Iowa-based recruitment firm handling the school district’s national superintendent search announced four finalists earlier this month. None of them were current or former school district employees — a situation that triggered concern from trustees, community members and district employees.

The trustees subsequently decided to widen the finalist pool by adding internal candidates to the mix. The board asked the search firm to contact all current and former district employees who applied for the job and request their permission to have their names made public.

The board meets Thursday evening to discuss which internal candidates it wants to put forward for an interview. Pubic interviews with all superintendent candidates will take place April 27.

One of the finalists recommended by the search firm — John Deasy, former superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District — withdrew his candidacy last week. The other three finalists are Donald Haddad, superintendent of St. Vrain Valley Schools in Longmont, Colorado; Shonda Huery Hardman, who previously worked as an administrator in several large districts; and Jesus Jara, deputy superintendent of Orange County Public Schools in Orlando.
