A new pair of commercials launched by a political action committee linked to the Culinary Union is taking the unusual step of highlighting former Rep. Steven Horsford’s hard loss four years ago.

The two commercials, backed by Culinary Union umbrella organization UNITE Here, started Wednesday and are set to run for the next month in the Las Vegas market as Horsford seeks to set himself apart from a large field of Democratic primary opponents. One features a worker in a hard hat speaking somberly about one-term Horsford’s 2014 loss to Republican Cresent Hardy.

“When Steven Horsford went to Congress, he stood for things that some of us took for granted,” the actor says. “100 percent record with Planned Parenthood. Overtime pay. Protecting DREAMers. And jobs with benefits."

“The Republicans defeated Steven,” the actor continues. “And none of that is safe anymore.”

Another version features a young woman asking viewers if they remember that Horsford supported Planned Parenthood, DREAMers and protections for women in the workplace during his time in Congress.

Horsford’s surprise defeat in his 2014 re-election bid to the Democratic-leaning 4th Congressional District has been attributed in part to low enthusiasm among Democrats during that cycle.

Horsford is the only Democratic candidate with experience in Congress and is the best-funded of his primary opponents, who include state Sen. Pat Spearman, progressive health-care advocate Amy Vilela, high school principal John Anzalone and Nevada System of Higher Education Regent Allison Stephens. A former director of the Culinary Union’s job training academy, he also scored that group’s coveted endorsement.
