A full week after sexual harassment allegations surfaced against Rep. Ruben Kihuen, the powerful Culinary Union that helped propel him to election victory last year weighed in on the matter without asking him to resign.

The union's secretary-treasurer, Geoconda Argüello-Kline, released a statement Friday saying the labor organization supports a "full and fair investigation" into the allegations.

"Our union’s history is one of challenging a discriminatory status quo," Argüello-Kline wrote. "As a union of strong women who have never accepted sexual harassment and gender discrimination, we respect the women who come forward to change what should never have been. We demand equality and a harassment-free environment at home, at school, at work, and everywhere we go."

Kihuen's mother is a member of the Culinary Union. The Democratic congressman frequently mentioned being the son of a Las Vegas Strip housekeeper during his speeches on the campaign trail.

BuzzFeed reported last week that a former 25-year-old campaign staffer accused Kihuen of sexual harassment — which ultimately led to her resignation — during his 2016 congressional campaign. The allegations have prompted calls for him to resign, including from Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Jacky Rosen.

So far, Kihuen has refused to resign and hasn't addressed whether he will seek re-election.
