A national group supporting Democratic attorney general candidates deleted a social media post boosting Nevada candidate Aaron Ford after a warning from the Nevada attorney general’s office.

The Democratic Attorneys General Association deleted a tweet Tuesday published in March when it endorsed Ford in his bid for the attorney general’s office, after being warned by the attorney general’s office that use of the state’s seal in the tweet violated a state law prohibiting use of the seal without permission from the governor.

In a response letter to a request by the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) sent earlier in June, the Nevada attorney general’s office agreed that the tweet included an “unauthorized reproduction” of the state seal and would ask both the committee and candidate to take down the post.

“We agree that any improper use of the Great Seal of the State of Nevada is not a trivial violation of the law because it carries the implication of official state action and endorsement,” Bureau Chief of Government Affairs Gregory Zunino wrote in a June 19 letter to RAGA and provided to The Nevada Independent.

A spokesperson for the Democratic Attorneys General Association said they had received the letter from the Nevada attorney general’s office and had subsequently deleted the tweet.

“The attorney general is the top legal officer of Nevada; the official should understand, respect, and follow the law," RAGA Communications Director Zach Roday said in a statement. "Aaron Ford does not see it that way. He can’t define larceny. He readily admits he wouldn’t follow Nevada law if it doesn’t align with his politics. And, now he is improperly promoting his campaign by using the Great Seal of the State of Nevada. I’m excited to see what’s next.”

Ford will face off against Republican Wes Duncan in the 2018 general election to replace the current Attorney General Adam Laxalt, a Republican.

Updated at 11:46 a.m. to include a statement from Zach Roday.
