Cyber-security. Animal welfare. Health care. Veteran suicides. Firefighter safety. Immigration.

Those were just a few of the issues Nevada’s delegates shed light on via news releases this week — the second full work week since their August recess. The past few days didn’t bring any bombshell political developments, so there wasn’t a cascade of missives articulating each delegate’s stance on a particular issue.

Instead, the state’s two senators and four representatives appeared to focus on causes near and dear to their hearts, like protecting animals from natural disasters or firefighters from cancer.

For the record: We’re not complaining. After all, it’s only a matter of time before the political rhetoric heats up again. Debates over health care and tax reform are on the horizon.

In the meantime, here’s a look at what they really wanted their constituents — and, of course, the media — to know this past week. (And, yes, we kept the actual punctuation — capitalizations included — found within the press release subject lines.)

CATHERINE CORTEZ MASTO

The details: Sen. Dean Heller came close to sending more news releases this week than the queen of media missives — Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto — but in the end, her team sent more. Seventeen, to be exact.

She started the week’s messages on a poignant note, commemorating the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11th attacks. She was in a Washington, D.C. courtroom that day working as a district attorney.

“The horror of that day is still marked in our hearts, but even more powerful than the fear we felt is the hope and unity that came after,” she said in a statement. “The events of that day and the stories of heroic firefighters, police officers, first responders, and passengers on Flight 93 broke our hearts and strengthened our resolve.”

Her week ended in northern Nevada, where she participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce.

Also of note: The news releases her team sent later in the week all included Spanish translations.

DEAN HELLER

The details: It was a big week for Sen. Dean Heller.

He was one of four GOP senators to unveil a bill that would undo the Affordable Care Act and largely upend federal control over health-care markets. The legislation has been described as Republicans’ last-ditch effort to repeal so-called Obamacare, given that the deadline to do so on a party-line vote is Sept. 30.

Heller’s communications staff sent out a dozen news releases this week — well above the norm — but only one directly referenced health care. It included a video of the senator talking about the health-care bill he was co-sponsoring.

“I believe the goal of health care reform should be to lower costs, increase access, and improve the quality of health care in this country,” Heller said. “One critical way to accomplish these goals is to provide states with the tools they need to meet the unique health-care needs of their citizens. That’s why I’ve been working with my colleagues Senators Cassidy and Graham on a proposal that will take the decision making and money out of Washington and bring it back to the states.”

The other 11 missives touched on everything from the Equifax cyber-security breach and tax reform to human trafficking and veteran suicides.

DINA TITUS

The details: It’s no secret that Congresswoman Dina Titus is an animal lover. Remember the aptly-named PUPPERS Act, anyone?

Well, she’s championing four-legged friends again. Titus announced that she re-introduced legislation that would require entities under the Animal Welfare Act to adopt emergency contingency plans to better protect animals during natural and manmade disasters.

“With the images of flamingos, dolphins, domestic pets and other species fleeing or abandoned in the path of natural disasters, the recent catastrophic weather events in our nation serve as a reminder of the need to help protect those creatures that cannot protect themselves in an emergency,” she said in a news release. “It is only fair and reasonable to require a demonstration of readiness from those who earn a living from animal-related businesses. Not doing so jeopardizes the safety of first-responders, citizens, and the creatures themselves when disaster strikes.”

Titus previously introduced the legislation during the 113th Congress and 114th Congress.

RUBEN KIHUEN

The details: Firefighters were on the mind of more than one Nevada delegate this week. (See below.) For Rep. Ruben Kihuen, that meant announcing that the North Las Vegas Fire Department will receive more than $70,000 in federal grant funding to purchase equipment and other resources.

Kihuen also cheered the receipt of two other federal grants — one for rural development in Caliente and another for urban-area security in Las Vegas.

As for legislative activities, Kihuen announced that he is co-sponsoring the Medicare Buy-In and Health Care Stabilization Act. The legislation would allow people ages 50-64 to buy into Medicare as an affordable health-care option.

“This legislation builds on the successes of the Affordable Care Act while offering innovative solutions that will move us forward towards a health-care system that works for all Americans,” he said in a statement.

JACKY ROSEN

The details: Congresswoman Jacky Rosen is the great-granddaughter and grandniece of firefighters, so co-sponsoring legislation to create a cancer registry for whom she describes as “our nation’s heroes” was an easy decision.

“This legislation will provide vital information to help cancer research efforts so we can better prepare and protect our heroes in Nevada and across the country from the dangers they face while protecting our communities,” she said in a news release.

Of the four missives Rosen sent to the media this week, three fell under the umbrella of protection — protecting firefighters from cancer, women from domestic violence and consumers from cyber security breaches.

Concerning the latter, Rosen joined several colleagues who sent a letter to the Equifax chairman and CEO, demanding answers about why the credit-reporting agency didn’t fix software before the cyber attack that put at risk sensitive information for as many as 143 million Americans.

Rosen, a former computer programmer, didn’t mince words in a statement about the breach.

“Their irresponsible actions have left millions of Americans vulnerable to identity theft,” she wrote. “I will continue to fight on behalf of consumers by demanding answers from Equifax on why it failed to fix its software months before it experienced a massive hack.”
