Dispatches from Washington: Nevada's delegates focus on health care

The U.S. Senate delayed its vote on the controversial health care bill, but that didn’t stop most Nevada delegates from reiterating their stances on it.
Sen. Dean Heller, who notably stood alongside Gov. Brian Sandoval earlier this month to oppose the Senate bill, shied away from the topic. He was the only state delegate who didn’t at least refer to health care in a press release this week.
Not surprisingly, the state’s Democratic representatives — Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and Congress members Ruben Kihuen, Jacky Rosen and Dina Titus — slammed the legislation in their continued campaign against any repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
Congressman Mark Amodei, however, used insurers’ exit from rural counties in Nevada as an opportunity to express his discontent with the current health care system while calling for change. He didn’t offer a solution — just affirmed his commitment to any reform package focused on increasing access to “quality and affordable care.”
What else was on delegates’ minds this week? National monuments, Pride month, veteran-related issues and, as always, Yucca Mountain, just to name a few.
Here’s a look at what they really wanted their constituents — and, of course, the media — to know this past week (And, yes, we kept the actual punctuation — capitalizations included — found within the press release subject lines.):
SEN. CATHERINE CORTEZ MASTO
Number of press releases issued this week: 15

The details: Cortez Masto again took home the top prize this week for most press releases issued by her staff. Of the 15 releases sent out on her behalf, seven were related to the Senate health care bill and the recent decision of insurers to pull out of the Nevada exchange amid uncertainty about the future of health care at the federal level. But health care wasn’t her only focus this week. She also took time to highlight federal grants for an airport runway rehabilitation in Gabbs – a tiny town in Nye County — and decry a House bill that would revive plans to create a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain.

SEN. DEAN HELLER Number of press releases issued this week: 9 ![]() The details: None of Heller’s press releases this week mentioned the Senate’s health care bill despite the fact that the Republican senator is at the epicenter of the debate around the legislation, attending a Tuesday meeting with President Donald Trump about it earlier this week. Instead, the Republican senator highlighted veterans and water conservation bills he introduced with his Senate colleagues and decried the Yucca Mountain bill moving forward in the House. “This legislation is dead on arrival in the Senate. The only real solution to our nation’s nuclear waste problem is through consent based siting like in my bipartisan, bicameral legislation, the Nuclear Waste Informed Consent Act,” Heller said. “We owe it to the American taxpayer to move past the failed policies of Yucca Mountain. I will continue to stand with the State of Nevada and fight this reckless proposal every step of the way in the U.S. Senate.” Press release subject lines:
CONGRESSMAN RUBEN KIHUEN Number of press releases issued this week: 6 ![]() The details: Kihuen’s district includes two national monuments, Gold Butte and Basin and Range. So when Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke visited Pahrump earlier this week, Kihuen put out a statement calling on Zinke to protect the two sites. "While I am pleased to hear that Secretary Zinke has decided to visit Gold Butte and Basin and Range before making a decision on the reduction of these state treasures, I urge him to not make changes that will impact Nevada’s natural beauty and harm our state’s economy, cultural heritage and ecology,” he said. Kihuen also put out a number of releases criticizing the Senate health care bill in addition to highlighting a bill he introduced to strengthen ballistic missile reporting. And as Nevada prepared to begin recreational pot sales, he urged Attorney General Jeff Sessions to not prosecute marijuana-related cases in the state. Press release subject lines: |

CONGRESSWOMAN JACKY ROSEN
Number of press releases issued this week: 5

The details: The Senate hopeful again didn’t shy away from the Senate Republican health care bill this week, calling the legislation “as mean as its House counterpart” and urging her allies to remain vigilant in opposing the bill even as Republicans delayed a vote on it. Like her colleagues, she also took time to condemn the Yucca Mountain bill moving forward and the news that health insurers were backing out of offering coverage to 14 of Nevada’s 17 counties on the insurance exchange.

CONGRESSWOMAN DINA TITUS
Number of press releases issued this week: 4

The details: Titus, who indicated this week that she is seriously mulling a Senate bid, used half her press releases this week to criticize what she termed “Trumpcare.” The congresswoman said that people opposed to the Senate’s health care bill must “stay vigilant and work toward a solution to ensure that families can have health care plans without worrying about insurance companies and politicians pulling the rug out from under them.”
She also criticized the Yucca Mountain bill moving forward and called the president’s revised travel ban, which went into effect this week, “xenophobic.”

CONGRESSMAN MARK AMODEI
Number of press releases issued this week: 2

The details: After releasing zero press releases last week, Amodei’s communications team issued two this week concerning hot-button issues in the state — nuclear waste storage and health care for the rural areas. The congressman, whose district includes many of Nevada’s rural counties, said he wasn’t surprised by insurers’ decision to only offer coverage through the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange to residents of Clark, Washoe and Nye counties.
“It represents another symptom of the sickness that is killing America’s health care system,” Amodei said in a statement. “While there are plenty of arguments on how to fix this, regardless of your political views, it’s clear the status quo isn’t working and is in need of serious repair.”
