Laborers union taps Latin Chamber boss for new gig

The Las Vegas-based Laborers union local has hired Latin Chamber of Commerce President Peter Guzman in a newly created role of "director of diversity advancement."

Local 872 leader Tommy White confirmed Guzman's hiring Friday. White has taken the once-obscure labor organization to prominence, taking a lead role in promoting the Oakland Raiders' move to Las Vegas and has flooded the political world with cash.

Guzman, seen as a political up and comer who may seek office someday, said "Tommy asked me to help out, and I think it's powerful. It elevates our chamber in all sectors."

Guzman said he plans to help the Laborers with their apprenticeship program. White estimated the union, which has 3,200 members, is 65 percent minority members -- 40 percent Latino and 25 percent African American.

The Laborers have been sued for racial discrimination. Guzman's chamber has many minority contractors, which also may help the union.
