Meet our new opinion editor

Our catchphrase at The Nevada Independent is “Your State. Your News. Your Voice.” And while our staff is laser focused on those first two parts, we have never had someone whose entire job it is to amplify “your voice.”
Until now.

We’re thrilled to be welcoming Andrew Kiraly this week as our new opinion editor. He’s a Vegas native, the former longtime editor of Desert Companion magazine, founder of cultural newsletter TheList.Vegas and a brilliant writer and thinker. Read more about him on our team page.
We’re incredibly proud of the work that our regular columnists — John L. Smith, David Colborne and Michael Schaus — do week in and week out to put the news in perspective, inform and entertain. We’re grateful for the submissions readers provide. But we want to take things to the next level, cultivating an even broader and more diverse group of contributors who truly help readers see their state and their world in new ways.
Think “ideas page,” not just “opinion page.”
The goal isn’t quantity — it’s quality. We want to curate a handful of absolute must-read gems each week, and we want the page to be nimble and responsive to the issues of the moment. We’re going for provocative, memorable, must-share, needle-moving kinds of commentary and opinion pieces.
We see tremendous potential for The Indy to foster community conversations and help Nevadans better understand each other and change this state for the better. In coming weeks, we’ll be relaunching the page, updating our guidelines for submitting work and introducing fresh new voices. If you can’t wait until then and have an idea you want to share now for a writer who should grace the page or a topic you want debated, drop a line to Andrew at [email protected].
We can’t do it without you. Thanks for reading and supporting The Indy.
