Amid widespread limits on non-essential travel, Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport — in normal times one of the busiest airports in the world — saw the number of passengers passing through the airport last month fall by more than 96 percent compared to the same time in 2019.

The airport reported that the number of passengers in April cratered to just over 152,000, a mere fraction of the more than 4.2 million passengers McCarran saw in April 2019. Year-to-date, the airport has served roughly 6 million fewer passengers in 2020 than it had at this point in 2019, or a drop of 36.9 percent.

Most of those passengers, nearly 149,000, flew on domestic flights, while nearly 6,000 flew on helicopters. With international travel bans still largely in effect across the world, there were no international passengers reported.

Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a travel advisory at the end of March that urged out-of-state visitors to self-quarantine for 14 days and asked Nevadans to limit any non-essential trips.

Among individual airlines, all domestic carriers saw the number of passengers drop by between 93 percent and 98 percent.

Southwest Airlines alone saw passengers in April dip by nearly 1.5 million, down to just 69,000. Normally the domestic airline with by-far the most domestic travel through McCarran, Southwest reported a passenger volume of just 3.2 million year-to-date for 2020, compared to 5.8 million passengers at this point in 2019.

Correction - 3:14 p.m. - An earlier version of this article mistakenly said "4.2 million flights McCarran saw in 2019." The data point being referenced is, in fact, 4.2 million passengers.
