2018 was one for the books.
Nevada became the first state in the nation with a female-majority Legislature. Voters elected Rep. Jacky Rosen to the U.S. Senate — meaning the state will have two female senators for the first time — and ushered in the state's first-ever female-majority Supreme Court. They also elected the state's first Democratic governor in two decades, Steve Sisolak.
The state was also host to a revolving door of elected officials from both sides of the aisle who traveled here to energize voters ahead of the midterm election: On the right, President Donald Trump, his three children, Vice President Mike Pence, members of the Trump administration, and House Speaker Paul Ryan; on the left, former President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and U.S. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
But beyond the headlines, Nevadans grappled with the very real consequences of decisions from the national to the local level on their lives. Children struggled and succeeded in yet another year of school. The homeless celebrated the opening of a new resources courtyard. Immigrants contended with how to live their lives amid constant uncertainty.
At The Nevada Independent , we told you those stories. But our photographers — Jeff Scheid, Daniel Clark, David Calvert, Mikayla Whitmore and Ronda Churchill — also captured those moments, both big and small. As we enter our third year, we'd like to look back and share with you some of our favorite photos from 2018.
