The Clark County School Board of Trustees made no decision Thursday night regarding a proposed land sale to North Las Vegas.

Trustees chose to table the item while district and city officials discuss the proposal in greater detail. The proposal involves a 2-acre parcel at the corner of Lake Mead Boulevard and Jefferson Street, which is in North Las Vegas’ redevelopment area. The school district owns the property and currently uses it as a maintenance yard.

North Las Vegas officials have offered to purchase the land for $750,000, which is roughly $139,000 more than recent appraisals. But district officials say it would cost more than $3.7 million to build a replacement yard and new building if factoring in construction costs, architecture and engineering fees and offsite improvements.

Mayor John Lee and Gina Gavan, the city’s director of economic development, attended the school board meeting Thursday night and explained their desire to own that parcel. It’s part of the city’s plan to revitalize North Las Vegas’ urban core with more amenities, green space and entertainment options for residents.

Gavan said the property likely would be developed into a small commercial center, perhaps with sit-down restaurants or office space.

“This isn’t something that’s going to happen tomorrow,” Gavan said.

City officials also noted that $5 million worth of roadway improvements are planned in the area where the district would relocate its maintenance yard — district-owned property near Cheyenne Avenue and Commerce Street.

Still, trustees expressed concerns about the added costs they’d be facing if moving the maintenance yard.

“We don’t feel we’re getting much of a win-win out of this,” Trustee Linda Young said.

The proposed land sale had stirred tensions among school board members. Board President Deanna Wright sent Trustee Kevin Child a letter last September that scolded him for allegedly negotiating the deal with North Las Vegas officials despite authority to do so.
