Schwartz is first in governor's race to air commercials; declares he "will fix" education, says Laxalt has "no solutions"
Republican gubernatorial candidate and Treasurer Dan Schwartz has launched a pair of TV ads, becoming the first governor hopeful to go up with commercials.
Schwartz, the perceived underdog in the race, announced the two, 15-second ads on Tuesday. One starts with police sirens and the words “Code Red Emergency,” noting that in spite of a tax increase, Nevada still ranks last in education.
“As governor, Dan Schwartz will fix it,” the voiceover says.
A second, 15-second commercial opens up with a line from a Reno Gazette-Journal opinion piece calling Laxalt an “empty suit.” It features shots of a grinning Laxalt and scrolls through a list of donations the attorney general has taken.
“Adam Laxalt answers few questions and offers no solutions, taking money from about every lobbyist and casino in town,” the voiceover says. “He can’t provide the adult leadership Nevadans deserve.”
It also alludes to the fact that Schwartz, who is independently wealthy, isn’t taking corporate donations.
“Dan Schwartz has been a CEO, solves problems, and won’t take a dime from lobbyists,” it says.
Schwartz’s campaign manager, Rory McShane, said the ads are now playing on cable and online and constitute a six-figure ad buy.
Asked for comment on the ads, a spokesman pointed to the volunteer response to Laxalt's campaign.
"Response? We prefer to let the thousands of grassroots supporters who are enthusiastic about Adam's vision for Nevada and joining our grassroots team -- the one we're building to be better than any other this state has ever seen -- respond on behalf of our campaign," campaign manager Andy Matthews said in a statement.
"Nearly three thousand Nevadans from across the state have already signed up to volunteer for our campaign," he continued. "We had 200 people show up at our campaign office opening in Las Vegas. We recently reported having more small-dollar donors than any candidate -- Republican or Democrat -- running for Governor, comprised of donors from every county in Nevada. We have recruited statewide campaign chairs, county chairs, and precinct chairs, in addition to earning the endorsement of 16 out of 17 elected county sheriffs. Over 200 veterans have joined our Veterans Coalition, while we have over 100 teachers in our Teachers Coalition, and 100 women in our Women's Coalition, just to name a few of our supporter groups."
