Sixty-six students from Nevada’s two largest school districts have been named semifinalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program — a distinction that places them among an elite group of teens nationwide.

Semifinalists represent less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors and are eligible to compete for the prestigious National Merit Scholarships. To be named a semifinalist, students must be among the highest-scoring participants of the Preliminary SAT test, otherwise known as the PSAT.

Fifty-five students from the Clark County School District and 11 from the Washoe County School District were named semifinalists this year. They were selected from more than 1.6 million eleventh-graders across the country who took the test last year.

Twenty-five semifinalists in the Clark County School District attend Clark High School, which has three magnet programs. Galena High School produced the most semifinalists — four students — in the Washoe County School District.

"This is a tremendous honor for our students and their schools," Clark County Superintendent Jesus Jara said in a statement. "Congratulations to our students, their families and the educators who support them. I wish you much success as you continue on in the competition to earn scholarships."

Semifinalists must submit a detailed application with information about their academic record, community and school involvement, leadership abilities, employment and other honors to be considered for the finalist designation. They’ll be competing for scholarships worth more than $31 million next spring.

Last year, 12 students from the Washoe County School District and 62 from the Clark County School District were National Merit Scholarship semifinalists.
