Jon Ralston speaks during an Indy Talks event.

It’s a big day here at The Indy — we are posting not one, but three different opportunities to join our team, and it represents an exciting new chapter for our organization as we grow in size and ambition. Here’s a rundown:

  • Deputy managing editor: We are seeking a seasoned editor passionate about telling great stories to help expand our capacity for powerful journalism. If you haven’t already noticed, we’ve shifted our focus in the past six months to more “leveled up” stories — ones that are exclusive, deeply analytical and investigative. More often, we’re passing up on stories that many other outlets will cover in the interest of making room for journalism with greater impact and a more distinctive approach. The trade-off — these more complex stories require greater time and care from the editing team, especially as we add reporters. The deputy managing editor will help us build capacity by taking ownership of our op-ed page — casting and executing a vision for a vibrant marketplace of ideas and top-quality, provocative writing — and help take this Daily Indy newsletter to the next level. There’s also the opportunity to lead our internship program, which has helped develop some incredible journalists over the years — some of whom remain members of our team, and others who are doing great journalism in Nevada and beyond.
  • D.C. correspondent: Gabby Birenbaum’s departure last week leaves huge shoes to fill in the nation’s capital. Her investigation into how Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV) quietly helped squash an effort to unionize her congressional office is indicative of the kind of work this reporter will be asked to do — in-depth stories that go beyond press releases and news of the day to tell Nevadans about what’s really going on with the state’s congressional delegation and in the federal government and how it affects Nevadans. This is a unique and increasingly rare opportunity to work for a state-based publication in D.C.
  • Fall 2025 intern: We don’t have interns at The Indy to do grunt work or job shadow — they are, from day one, producing important journalism that aligns with our mission in an intensive environment geared toward preparing them for real-world employment in the field. We are seeking a serious candidate with previous newsroom internship experience to join our team in the fall, preferably on a full-time basis. Share this with a college upperclassman, graduate student or recent graduate who you think could help round out our team.

The longevity of many of our team members says it all — The Indy is a great place to work with good pay and benefits. We value work-life balance, and we’re proud to be doing meaningful work each and every day. If you or someone you know would like to be a part of it, apply now — we’ll be closing up applications in just a few weeks.

And thanks to the readers and donors who support our work. We couldn’t do it without you.
