Wynn to rally field troops Wednesday in Vegas

When Steve Wynn became the finance chairman of the Republican National Committee, I thought he was nuts.

I didn’t think he’d have the patience or the time. But it turns out I was wrong.

How wrong?

Not only is he raising money, but he is giving speeches to the faithful at the state GOP convention -- the last place I ever thought I’d see him. And Wednesday evening at Brady Industries, Wynn is holding an invite-only town hall for 200 or so field operatives.

Yes, Steve Wynn. Having a conversation with the folks who register and mobilize voters.

“That’s how you win elections,” he told me Tuesday. “The field operations.”

Wynn insisted that he is dedicated to adding more Republicans to elective offices all the way down the ticket, trying to ensure more GOP seats in the Legislature. He could not have been more emphatic -- even for him -- during our brief conversation.

I’m reliably told that Wynn has studied the ground game mechanics at a granular level just as he might want to inspect the molding at one of his resorts. He is a detail guy. One source said Wynn understands the failed ‘16 ground game in Nevada as well as anyone who worked on it.

In a state where the Democratic operation has been formidable, Wynn and the RNC appear to understand that in the first post-Harry-Reid machine election, the field is everything. The RNC already has dozens of folks here, and on Tuesday announced a state director, Dan Coats. He’s a veteran hand who was deputy director of the Florida GOP in 2016.

Remember, too, that Wynn’s top political guy is Chris Carr, one of the most savvy pols I have encountered and a former RNC political director. So Wynn is in, all the way, for the GOP this time.

Next thing you know, Steve Wynn will be knocking on your door asking you to vote for Dean Heller….
