Such an inhumane obsession over the raw number of arrests — rather than a calculated push to deport “the worst of the worst” — is the sort of directive one would expect from Joseph Stalin’s NKVD during the Great Purge rather than American law enforcement agencies.

Aguero said the lack of tariff details makes it hard to forecast any one outcome for a Nevada industry or the state’s economy as a whole — if the tariffs are successful in bolstering domestic manufacturing, Nevada would benefit; if they raise prices on fuel, Nevada could suffer.

With Republicans taking control of both houses of Congress and the White House, Amodei will be the most influential Nevadan in the Capitol. And his mission goes beyond his Nevada priorities — his position as chair of the Homeland Security subcommittee in the Appropriations Committee will be more important, and scrutinized, than ever, as he’s tasked with funding the agencies that President-elect Donald Trump plans to deploy toward his mass deportation campaign.

Such a policy would require an act of Congress. But the idea and the venue where he proposed it had strategic merit.

Miller likened the Fed’s situation to trying to land a plane on an aircraft carrier with a runway that is too short. The Fed must be precise to navigate a “soft landing” for the economy.

The economy continues to suffer from rising prices, as prolonged effects from the pandemic and now the war in Ukraine, contribute to global supply chain issues.

The rate of workers quitting their jobs has continued to rise — in October, the latest month with state-level job turnover data available, Nevada ranked seventh for its rate of job separations and third for rate of quits.

Miller said he does expect the higher inflation rate to be short-lived, but said he does not know whether that means six months or two years. As supply chain issues subside, Miller said it may be clearer how inflation is changing by early next year.
