Democrats file ethics complaint against Heller over website photo

The Nevada State Democratic Party is filing yet another ethics complaint against Sen. Dean Heller, accusing the Republican senator of improperly using a photo taken by a federal agency on his campaign website.

The complaint, which was filed Thursday with the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Ethics, states that Heller is violating Senate ethics rules by using a photo of himself taken by a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs photographer from 2014, and using the photo on his website and in campaign material.

"Whether the photo is a still from the official Senate broadcast or one taken by a photographer for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the photo is an official government resource that may not be used to conduct campaign or political activities," the complaint states.

A spokesman for Heller's campaign dismissed the complaint as frivolous.

"This latest frivolous complaint shows just how weak Nevada Democrats perceive their anointed candidate, Jacky Rosen," Heller campaign spokesman Keith Schipper said. "If Rosen respected our tax dollars, she would demand her political party quit wasting them in shameless attempts to distract Nevadans from the fact that she has been a complete failure in Congress."

The state party has filed at least three other ethics complaints against Heller in the preceding six months, including accusations that he inappropriately copied and pasted campaign press releases from his U.S. Senate office.

The ethics committee, which is composed of an equal number of Republicans and Democrats, hasn't taken action on the previous complaints filed by the state party.
