Focus: The Energy Choice Initiative, which will be on the ballot as Question 3

Who’s paying for it: Coalition to Defeat Question 3, the group opposing the ballot question

Size of buy: Part of an ongoing six-figure buy

When it starts: Sept. 15

Where it’s running: Statewide

The gist: The ad largely reiterates many of the claims opponents have made against the Energy Choice Initiative, which would amend Nevada’s Constitution with language requiring the state to move to a competitive retail electric market by 2023.

The ad, which lists some of the community, senior-focused, union and environmental groups that have opposed the ballot measure, says that states with competitive electric markets have higher electric costs and that passage of the initiative would jeopardize NV Energy’s recently-announced plans to construct six major solar projects, but only if the initiative doesn’t pass. States with open electric markets do have higher rates than the national average, but have also seen the price of electricity drop at a faster rate over the past decade.
