Giunchigliani snags EMILY's List endorsement in gubernatorial race

Chris Giunchigliani — the only woman in Nevada's gubernatorial race — has received an endorsement from EMILY's List, a political action committee dedicated to electing female candidates who are pro-choice Democrats.

The endorsement means EMILY's List will work with Giunchigliani's campaign in an advisory role and potentially boost her fundraising ability via introductions to the organization's large network of donors. She has raised only about a sixth of what her Democratic primary foe, Steve Sisolak, has.

Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY's List, noted in statement that endorsing Giunchigliani, who could potentially be Nevada's first female governor, was an opportunity the organization couldn't pass up.

"She is a proven leader on women's health, economic opportunity for working families, better public schools, fiscal responsibility, and leveling the playing field for small business owners," Schriock wrote. "Now, Chris is taking that passion and dedication to improving Nevadans' lives to the governor's seat. Chris G will be a fierce leader and strong champion for Nevada women and families in a state that has never before elected a woman as governor. EMILY's List is thrilled to stand by her side."

Giunchigliani is challenging Sisolak in the primary election in June. They both serve on the Clark County Commission.

Earlier this month, Giunchigliani reported raising more than $832,000 last year for her campaign. She also recently received an endorsement from the Nevada State Education Association, but the local union — the Clark County Education Association — has thrown its support behind Sisolak.

Disclosure: Steve Sisolak, Christina Giunchigliani and the Nevada State Education Association have donated to The Nevada Independent. You can see a full list of donors here.
