Washington D.C. was abuzz this week with talk of Republicans’ tax overhaul plan, which seeks to slash the corporate tax rate almost in half in hopes of making the country more competitive, but has strident critics among Democrats who say it will gut the federal budget to give handouts to the rich.

The House voted 216-212 on Thursday in favor of a budget resolution passed last week by the Senate. Although the budget cuts outlined in the resolution are non-binding, the resolution includes rules that will allow Republicans to get tax cuts past procedural hurdles that Democrats normally could throw up.

Predictably, Republican Rep. Mark Amodei supported the resolution and all three Nevada House Democrats opposed it.

Republican leaders hope to get the tax rewrite enacted by the end of the year but are likely to face opposition within their own ranks once they reveal more specifics of their plan — so far they’ve just unveiled a broad framework.

Aside from that heavy lift, Nevada’s congressional representatives signed onto a spectrum of bills this week on topics ranging from early breast cancer detection to keeping animals safe in natural disasters.

All four Democrats in the delegation jumped on board with bills letting people buy into Medicaid at a cost if they aren’t eligible for the federal health insurance program already. The concept, which came up in the Nevada Legislature in 2017 but was vetoed by the governor, is nicknamed “Sprinklecare” for its Nevada sponsor, Assemblyman Mike Sprinkle.

And in the wake of the Las Vegas mass shooting, Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto co-sponsored a bill to expand gun background checks to transfers not currently covered by them, including sales at gun shows and by unlicensed dealers.

Check out The Nevada Independent’s congressional vote tracker and other information below to see what measures our state’s delegates threw their support behind this week.
