Judge orders execution of inmate Scott Dozier for week of July 9

A Clark County judge has issued an order of execution for inmate Scott Dozier that calls for his death the week of July 9.
The order comes after a court battle that wound its way to the Nevada Supreme Court. Justices ultimately struck down a lower court's decision that the third drug in an execution protocol — a paralytic — should not be used.
Dozier, 47, was originally scheduled to be executed in November 2017. He was convicted of two murders in Nevada and Arizona, voluntarily gave up his appeals and says he wants to be put to death.
A federal public defender representing Dozier raised the prospect that including the paralytic could lead to a torturous execution that would violate prohibitions on cruel and unusual punishment. But in overturning the lower court's decision, the justices focused their ruling on the procedural elements of the case and how the judge's order against the drug came about.
The state has struggled with obtaining execution drugs because many pharmaceutical companies object to the death penalty and supplying states with the medications and drugs on hand expire. A Nevada Department of Corrections spokeswoman didn't immediately respond to a request about whether the state had obtained all necessary drugs and, if so, how.
Dozier's execution would be the first to take place in the state in more than 11 years and would be the first carried out in a new execution chamber in Ely State Prison.
