Washoe County School District’s embattled former superintendent — who was terminated over the summer after being accused of leaking confidential information — could be assuming a principal role in Las Vegas.

The Clark County School District confirmed Thursday that Traci Davis has been recommended for the principal position at West Prep Academy by the school organizational team (SOT) and Superintendent Jesus Jara. District officials said West Prep’s SOT listed Davis as its top choice after the recruitment process. The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported her candidacy.

“I am extremely excited to recommend a proven leader to turnaround West Prep Academy,” Jara said in a statement.

If approved by the Clark County School Board, it would mark Davis’s return to the Las Vegas-area school district, where she grew up and spent the early portion of her career. Davis then moved north to the Washoe County School District, first serving as deputy superintendent and then, starting in 2014, as superintendent.

But her tenure with the Washoe County School District took an ugly turn over the summer, when she was accused of “gross misconduct” that led to leaked confidential information about a workplace harassment-related lawsuit. Davis went on an unexplained leave of absence in mid-June. By July 1, the Washoe County School Board voted 6-1 to terminate her.

Davis has since filed a lawsuit against the Washoe County School District and its school board, alleging that she was wrongfully terminated. A status hearing is scheduled for Nov. 7.

The Clark County School District already has hired another former Washoe County School District employee — Byron Green —  allegedly involved in the leaking of confidential information. The Reno-area school district terminated Green, then the chief student services officer, around the same time Davis went on her leave of absence. Clark County School District officials confirmed he now works at Vegas Verdes Elementary.

It’s unclear how soon the Clark County School Board will consider approving Davis for the principal at West Prep, which has a two-star elementary school, one-star middle school and four-star high school. The Las Vegas Review-Journal previously reported that West Prep’s principal was removed because of low star ratings.
